EVEN WHEN YOU’RE NOT PERFECT
Hayley
God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
—ROMANS 5:8
If I’m totally honest, I would love to be perfect. Wouldn’t you? Sometimes I operate under the assumption that I can be perfect. I feel like if I fall short of perfection, God would actually be surprised. Why is that?
In the family of my childhood, my first nuclear family, there was no way to come back from disappointing someone. When you fell short, your relationship became fractured. That distance may have been tiny for a tiny offense, but it was there, and it was palpable.
Therefore, because of that wound from my childhood, I’ve felt the need to never, ever disappoint. It’s hard for me to believe that people have the ability to build bridges of forgiveness like God does.
All my life I’ve also struggled with the sin of hiding and omission . . . just like Adam and Eve’s first response to their original sin. If I disappoint or hurt someone, I’m so sure we can never repair the relationship that I’ll cover up my actions, make my sin look prettier than it is, or otherwise lessen the blow of the situation.
This thinking sells people short, though. It’s certainly selling God short. I desire to be perfect because in my head it’s easier to be perfect than to heal disappointment. It feels possible to be perfect but impossible to come together in intimacy after a crack in a relationship. In reality, though, I have it completely backward.
God can redeem any broken situation, so you don’t have to live up to perfection. Obeying and yielding to God, who is making you more like Christ, is not the same thing as striving for perfection out of fear.
